The Birmingham Bag

December 12, 2008

Know how little kids hold their breath for as long they can?  I remember it being very uncomfortable and in the end no one was impressed, no good had came from it.

I find myself in a similarly unrewarding uncomfortable situation.   At this point in the tour we  travel by bus and there is no limit to how many bags we can drag around with us.  For no good reason I decided to use only two bags and this has been my undoing.  I have been late, flustered and sweaty ever since.

I keep meaning to pick up a cheap duffel bag and alleviate my pointless suffering, but I never got around to it.  With a couple of hours to spare in Birmingham Alabama I decided to finally exhale and  took to the streets.

Downtown Birmingham looks exactly like the civil rights footage that we have all seen.  Except there are no white people, NONE.  In fact there are also no stores.  Sadly the recession has kicked the shit out of this town, the downtown area was just desolate.  No exaggeration I walked 30 blocks and the closest thing I saw to commerce was some  mom & pop department store (which was having a going out of business sale).

This department store would end up providing a small measure of relief, albeit it was of  the comic variety.    The only bags they had larger than a purse were the “Free Gift with Purchase” kind.  I don’t wear cologne yet I now own five assorted Calvin Klein fragrances which came free with my new bag.

Baltimore Black and Blues

December 11, 2008

If you have visited Baltimore than you have likely thought what I will now publicly say.  Baltimore, while structurally attractive and home to a nice aquarium, is home to some of the laziest people I have yet to encounter.

This is my theory.  I think that way back when slaves or newly freedmen made a run for the border they got to the very first northern city (Baltimore) and said, “That’s far enough, I be stoppin here”.

This “settle for mediocrity” mentality must have been passed down from generation to generation, resulting in a city full of half-assed loafers.  Congratulations Baltimore!

Samantha’s Visit

December 11, 2008

As an early Christmas gift I arranged for my niece Samantha to visit her Uncle Dan at work.  Despite ringing up a room service bill which somehow cost more than her two night stay at one of Baltimore’s  fancier hotels, it was certainly a tour highlight

Booq Laptop Bags

December 6, 2008

www.Booqbags.com

Booq advertises their high priced laptop bags  in all of my geek magazines.  Their marketing boasts that thier bags are both stylish and durable.  Half of that claim is true.

I got my first Booq bag as a birthday gift in October.  It was a gorgeous bag with many hidden compartments and amneties, however the bag shredded on the seam within two weeks.  Booq did the right thing and replaced it immediately, they even allowed me to replace the defective item with a larger and more expensive bag.

Of course none of this would be blog-worthy if the new bag had not also shredded.  My third Booq bag is now enroute to me.

I guess their customer service department is so great because they have had plenty of practice

Side Jobs

December 1, 2008

As we move from city to city one thing remains the same, catering.   We are touring with our own catering company, outfitted with a fully functional mobile kitchen.

The caterers have found time to form a band, JUST JANE.  On occasion they will arrange a club gig, and hang handmade posters around the backstage area to promote the show.

Here is a poster designed by the bands lead vocalist Sarah as well as my attempt at poster design.  (which the band didn’t think captured their essence)
